KAF studio
Schwedenhaus
Berlin, Germany
2023 - 2024
in collaboration with Ludwig Jenssen
photographs by Alex de Brabant
The project converts a commercial unit in the Schwedenhaus of the IBA Berlin into a recording studio and office for KAF - killingafriend. The idea has been to keep the identity of the iconic building from 1957 and preserve some of the original elements like the entrance door and glazing. Yet the new interior creates a calm space for creative work.
The studio is divided into two spaces. One includes a large table for conversation, combined with an open kitchen that serves daily needs but also as an invitation for smaller dinners or other occasions. The other space is the recording studio. Fitted with acoustic panels from the inside, the space distinguishes itself from the clean atmosphere consisting of white, concrete and stainless steel and becomes a creative booth. With a large door connecting both rooms, the studio can be transformed into one large space along the south-facing glazing, which gifts the studio with light throughout the day.

Max Musiol was born in 1997 in Hamburg, Germany. After working as a chef in Valparaiso and Berlin, he later studied architecture at the TU Berlin. Next to the studies, he collaborated with Ludwig Jenssen and Eugenio Perrazzo, mostly in interior and set design for commercial commissions and film projects. From 2021 to 2022, he moved to Basel to work for Herzog & de Meuron. In 2024, he finished his master’s degree with honours in Stockholm at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology. For his master’s studies in Stockholm, he was a recipient of the DAAD scholarship.
His understanding of architecture lies in the intent of creating a space of calm and silence that answers the rapidly changing world with restraint and discreetness. Simplifying and reducing to the very necessary are substantial to find and concentrate on the actual matter of the intended space. Therefore, a precise study of the context is the key to creating a building, interior or object that is related to the context and results in a condition of visual silence.
Since a young age, photography has been an unavoidable tool to explore and communicate the everyday and the extraordinary - circumstance, process and result.
